Jurn's Current Event - Teen Unemployment

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2012/03/15/high-teen-unemployment-could-hurt-future-job-growth

The percent of teen unemployment has risen from 23.2% to 23.8% with an overall unemployment rate at 8.3% in America. The amount of teen unemployment, through historical analysis, has shown to be increasing. Before the 2000's and in the mid 2000'sthe teen unemployment rate was below 15%. During the mid 2000's the rate was between 14-18%. Unemployment in teens is a problem because it reflects our economic issues on a larger scale. It also reflects a future job opportunities. First time jobs for teens teach skills for having and maintaining a job. A 1995 study showed that teens who worked 20 hours a week for 6-9 years earned annually 11% more than those who did not. One way America is trying to tackle this issue is through lowering minimum wage.

What are possible factors to teen unemployment? (Possible reasons as to why teens do not have jobs)

  1. I believe one of the main reasons why teens do not have jobs is because adult unemployment rates are also very high. Adult unemployment is a huge issue because adults have very many payments they have to make, as well as take care of themselves and supply for their children if they have them. Another reason why I believe that teen unemployment rates are so high is because of stereotypes. When I first got my job, my boss admitted to me that she took a huge risk hiring someone so young, but she later admitted that I convinced her that teenagers can be hard workers which lead her to hiring another girl my age.

  2. I agree with Michaela. Adult unemployment is an ongoing issue in our country. With so many people who were laid off from their jobs or lost their businesses to the recent recession, teenage employment is a second priority. Another reason why there is such high teen unemployment is because of how competitive colleges have gotten. I know for myself personally, all I seem to be doing after school is studying and preparing for the SAT. More teens should be working and applying for jobs after school because it gives you a taste of the real world, and prepares you for the future.

  3. I also agree that most teens can't get jobs now a days because many adults are getting blue collar jobs. Many are going for any job that than could possibly get in our economy today, plus I know many adults who get second jobs that are very low waged jobs just to get some extra money on the side.

  4. I agree with Kailey, Laura, and Michaela because there are a lot of adults still looking for jobs which makes it more competitive for teen our age to get jobs. Also it is very hard to find time in a busy life of a student applying to college such as going to school, hours of homework, and after school activities. It's really a challenge to multi-task in order to have a job on top of all of the other stress of school. After you finish your education you have the rest of your life to work, that's what I think that teens don't work as much as they should.

  5. I agree with everyone above that teen unemployment rate had increased because adult unemployment hase increased due to the recession and hiring teenagers is merly a second proirity. I strongly agree with Michaela that businesses tend to use stereotypes against hiring teens; such as that some teens are not as expirienced, hard working and responsible. If two applications were admitted to a business, one being a teenager and the other an adult, I believe that the adult would be hired instead of the teenager because adults have more payments and may have a lot more expirience in that field of work.

  6. I agree with my classmates above, I believe one of the main reasons why teens do not have jobs is because of our economy. Adult unemployment is a major issue because of all the expectations of an adult. They have to play mortgage/rent, and electricity, taxes and all the expenses that come with being a responsible adult. There is more pressure on adults to get jobs more now because of economy; therefore making it easy for teens to get jobs is so difficult. Another reason why I think teen unemployment rates are even higher is as Michaela said, stereotypes play a big role. Everyone has impressions and stereotypes. I am by far, the smallest and the youngest person at my work. When I first started working there, they had very low expectations for me because they thought I was too young. As Michaela said, bosses take a huge risk hiring someone so young, without really knowing the teenager. It’s also very hard for teenagers to get jobs because of experience. Getting your first job is so difficult because employers always ask about experience and references; it’s really hard to list experience as a teenager when you are trying to get your first job.

  7. I agree with my classmates on this one. Teenagers are having trouble finding jobs because adults too are having difficulties. When businesses are looking to hire someone, they would usually pick an adult over a teenager. Adults would seem to have more work experience than teenagers, and would therefore make a better employee. Teenagers don't even have a high school diploma, while adults most likely will have a high school diploma or higher. They are more qualified for the job than the teenager they are going up against. Also, as Michaela said, employers might have stereotypes against teenagers. They might think that teenagers are troublemakers and don't try hard. So this would lead them to not hiring the teenager and choosing an adult instead. In addition, people might believe that teenagers do not need the job as much as an adult does. Most teenagers still live with their parents, and their parents still support them. So money is not as big of a need to them when compared to an adult who has to support their own family. That adult needs the job because they have a family to feed and most teenagers have parents that support them. But then again, maybe some teenagers have to have a job because their parents cannot provide a sufficient amount of income to support their family. So that would be a difficult situation with the teen unemployment.

  8. I agree with all of my classmates. Teenagers have a hard time getting a job because of the bad economy and the fact that adults are having difficulty getting jobs as well. Like some of my classmates mentioned, an employer would most likely give the job to the adult if it was between an adult and a teenager. People expect adults to need the money more than teenagers. However, this is not always true. Some teenagers may have to support themselves and they may have to pay for their college without help from their family. Therefore, sometimes teenagers need the job just as much as the adult does, or maybe even more than the adult. Also, as Allie mentioned, it is very hard for a teenager to get their first job. The employers want to see that the teenager has experience and will follow the rules of the workplace. It is a risk for them to hire a teenager without reference from a previous job. Another reason I think there is a high unemployment rate for teens is that they have to balance school work, homework, and extra curricular activites. Therefore, they may not have time to have a job.

  9. Teen unemployment has many contributing factors to it. Yes, as others before me have said, it has a lot to do with adults high rate of unemployment, because in reality who is going to hire teenagers, when qualified adults are not even being hired? I think one of the biggest reasons for teen unemployment though, may be the lack of maturity in the teens. When I say this I am not speaking for all teenagers, but I do not think that teenagers are mature enough to have the jobs they do. This lack of maturity may end up in them quitting the job because of their lack of commitment. But along with lack of commitment, the employers may just not see an acceptable work ethic, therefore resulting in the teen getting fired or released from the job. In the end, I'm not so sure if it the bad economy, as many others of my classmates have thought. I think teen unemployment is because of the immaturity and unwillingness to take part in a serious job.

  10. I believe that there are many contributing factors to teen unemployment. First of not all teens even want a job, If they have after school activities such as sports or they just want to focus on school a job would just be a hassle. Also some more wealthier families, the teens have no reason to get a job, if everything is just handed to them. Also some teens just really don't care, Its not like they don't want a job it just doesn't matter to them if they have one or not.

  11. I agree with all of my classmates that have commented so far. Because adult unemployment is extremely high, it makes it all the more difficult for teenagers to find work. From experience I know that finding work is very hard. The jobs that used to be primarily for teenagers are now being filled by adults who too are having a hard time finding work. Also, stereotypes play a large role in teen jobs. For me, it is my hair. Because I have long hair, many work places probably see me as a lazy kid who doesn’t have much desire to hold a job. For those who know me, it is quite the opposite. With that said, I do think that there are other factors that limit teens from getting jobs easily. One of these outstanding factors is availability. When teens look for work, the places that hire them know that they cannot work until about 2:30 on any week day. This puts a burden on the company because they need to now make their schedule around the availability of a few teenagers. Another reason is the experience of a teen. Adults are much more experienced than teens in most cases so that makes them more desirable for many positions. All of these factors contribute to teen unemployment rates.

  12. There are many factors contributing to teen unemployment. Like my other classmates have stated if the teenager have further after school activities such as sports or wanting to focus on schoolwork then having a job might be too much for them. Although; if teenagers really do want to go out a make their own money there are plenty of opportunities out there. Even if they are playing sports there are always weekends, but like Andrea said immaturity does play a factor in this field. Some teens don’t notice how committed you have to be to keep a job and be successful at it. I think that many teens think that it will be easy money but don’t notice how much work you have to put in to be good at a job, this leading to teens getting frustrated and quitting. There are many reasons why there are so many unemployed teens but the main reason I think is the immaturity and laziness of teenagers today.

  13. There are many reasons teens do not have jobs right now. One reason can be contributed due to the place are economy is at right now. In past generations there was more jobs for adults which left jobs for kids. Now a days many adults with good education backgrounds who have graduated from respectable colleges can not even get jobs. they a forced to work with jobs that an below them which normally could be occupied by student teenagers. Also kids have other activities in their life which may get in the way of some jobs such as have 6 hours of school and a day then a sports or other activity after. In a small town like Hudson their are not many jobs around, kids are forced to work out of town sometimes and for that you need transportation.
