Laura Young's Current Event on Illegal Immigrants

The article, "A Sensible Path in California," talks about the new laws signed by their governor, Jerry Brown. These new laws are for the benefit of the illegal immigrants and they focus on their college education. The most important law, the California Dream Act, allows the students to apply for private scholarships and loans and also makes them eligible to seek state-financial aid. There are different opinions about this new law. Some people think it is a waste of money. However, others feel it is beneficial to California because it will help assimilate and educate the immigrants. Seeing as they are illegal immigrants, my question is, in your opinion, do you think this law is a waste of money or beneficial to California and why?

  1. I think that it is very beneficial to California if we help some illegal immigrants with financial aid for college. If we do not use these laws, then the immigrants would not be educated as well and may choose to take a very low paying job such as manual labor on farms. If we educate the immigrants, they will most likely get a higher paying job. It could also help assimilate the immigrants to American culture, but more importantly, make them a very useful and functioning member of American society.

  2. I agree with David that this is a very beneficial law for California. As he said, having immigrants go to college will help them be more successful in life. Because many immigrants also don't attend college, there could be so many that are smart and could contribute to our society. I feel that people see them as immigrants and therefore dumb. This is not the case though. For example, people who come over here that are very smart in their old country can't do the same jobs because some aren't able to attend college to get the necessary degree. They could contribute to our society, but aren't able to because they're not given the same chances as everyone else.

  3. I agree with Kayla and David I think this law will benefit everyone involved. It will help immigrants assimilate and become educated and have a better life, and it will give California more productive citizens. Illegal immigrants will always be here whether we like it or not with this la at least they can be well functioning members of our society. Like in the case of the journalist we were talking about in class, although he is here illegally we don't want to send him back because he makes major contributions to society and i think this law will help make more successful productive people.

  5. I completely disagree with David, Kayla, and Bobby; the Dream Act in my opinion is an absolute waste of money. If an immigrant would like to come over to America and become a LEGAL citizen then fine, they can get all of the benefits including a collage education with the help of federal money all the power to them. However, if an immigrant comes over to this country ILLEGALLY well then I would have a problem with them getting federal money because that is money that should be going to US CITIZENS and only to US CITIZENS. Our country is a rescission. Our own citizens cant afford schooling, why should we pay for somebody who is breaking the law, by not being a legal immigrant, so they can get better jobs then people who are legal? I think this is a fallacy and if they want to go to state collages and get federal funding they should become legal first.

  6. I agree with David, Kayla, and Bobby. I think this law will be beneficial to California in a number of ways. I think giving the Illegal Immigrants the chance to have a normal life and go to college will help them to, like Bobby said, assimilate and have a better life. If we gave them a chance, then maybe they would be more apt to apply to be a U.S. citizen. But on the other hand, I do also agree with John in a few ways. That federal money should be used on more U.S. citizens then illegal immigrants, but I think that maybe giving out a few scholarships to illegal immigrants wouldn't hurt anyone. If the government started giving out scholarships left and right, then people would come over here thinking they could get one too, and that would be a bad situation. If the money had to be earned, I think it definitely could be beneficial to the state of California.

  7. I agree with David, Kayla, and Bobby that giving scholarships and loans to illegal immigrants can be beneficial to the state. They can be educated and find a good job that will help make them a more useful member of society. With the education, they can work on becoming a legal citizen. But the scholarships shouldn't be given to just anyone. I feel it would be better to give the money to the most qualifying immigrants. The ones who seem as if they would take advantage of the opportunity and work hard to contribute to society should be receiving the money. I also agree with John and Sydney that more money should be going to legal citizens than the illegal ones. It's just fair that legal citizens should be the ones receiving more benefits. Some money can be given to illegal immigrants, but not to the point that they are getting equal amounts as legal citizens. The government can help foreigners, but they have to put their people first.

  8. I absolutely agree with the majority of the class. I think this law will benefit everyone involved. It will help immigrants assimilate and become educated- which leads to a better life. Also, it will give California more productive citizens. Illegal immigrants are always going to exist, it’s whether we allow them to be active members of our society or not! Like many of the authors we talk about in class, although they’re here illegally we don't want to send him back because he makes major contributions to society. I feel that this law will help make more successful productive people that will help make our society grow!

  9. Although I agree with what the majority of the others in that the Dream Act would be beneficial to California, I also think it is unfair. As John said, giving money to illegal immigrants when the money cold be going to a legal U.S citizens just does not seem fair/right. Like Matt said, legal immigrants should be the ones receiving benefits. On the other hand, The Dream Act may also be beneficial just like the others said. It will give illegal immigrants a shot at a better education and better life in general, the most likely reason they came to the United States illegally in the first place.
On a different note, I do not understand how this Dream Act would be put in to action because illegal immigrants being illegal, I don't understand how they would be rewarded rather than prosecuted.

  10. I absolutely agree with John. I understand that becoming a legal citizen or getting a visa for the United States is a very long process but it is what should be done. Our government doesn't have the money to give out scholarships to illegal immigrants. They come to the U.S. in order to better themselves and their families, not to benefit our nation. If we have so much money to give out scholarships, we should be giving that money to poor american citizens that are trying to make a better life for themselves. When we go to other countries it isn't common that they have scholarships for U.S. citizens, so I don't understand why we should have scholarships for illegal immigrants.

  11. I agree wtih John and am completely baffeled that anyone agrees otherwise. Especially us at our age. We are about to apply for college and More than likely we will all need finacial aid. College is expensive and should spent on Americans that are here entirely legally. It's entirely ridiculous. Why is it even it even in the question to give them money. That's like giving a murder a victim. We are keepig them breaking the law. The law is the law. It's not black and white but it is clear that they don't deserve the help others do!

  12. I completely agree with john, Why should we give illegal immigrants college aids. Especially since there are some Americans that cant afford to go to college. We should help our own before we help someone else. Why help a criminal? if someone hops the border and expects funds to go to college, i personally think that's ridiculous. if the immigrants come here legally, and go through the correct process then i agree that they can use some help. but definitely not an illegal immigrant.

  13. I agree with John, Crystal, Chelsea, and Trevor. I do not think it is in the best interest of American citizens to continue with the Dream Act. First, the money that is being spent on the illegal immigrants could be used in many other ways, and especially with this economy, we need to help our own before we can help anybody else! I am aware that it is more difficult for illegal immigrants to attain scholarships, but that is one of the downfalls to being an illegal immigrant, and therefore it is not our problem. Second, not only do we allow illegal immigrants to take advantage of our welfare system, but now there is this, too. So, we are now telling illegal immigrants, "Don't come here! We will give you a minimal, but still relevant salary and we will educate your children, all for free, but don't come here." Ridiculous.

  14. I agree with David that yes this act is beneficial to the illegal immigrants to have a better life because that is true. As Americans we strive for education and promote higher education to be successful. I also agree with Bobby withthe fact that acquiring higher education would blend the immigrants into the rest of the American society. But on the other hand it is an American privledge to get higher education through American law. Like John, why should some who is not apart of America statistically be able to get American benefits? As for David's point, if the immigrants get the higher paying jobs than that leaves legal Americans struggling to find those same jobs even though they payed for it themselves. I believe that it is a good idea in theory but it makes no sense with many standards we live under

  15. Although I do agree with the majority of the class about how the California Dream Act is beneficial towards a better life for the illegal immigrants and I do believe that it would help assimilate California better. I also agree with John that it is unfair to other Americans. Financial aid is tough to get even when you're an American therefore I do not think that it is fair for illegal immigrants to be able to get it. If you are a citizen of the United States you deserve that financial aid over someone who is living in here illegally.

  16. I do believe that education is very important and everyone needs to be educated in order to succeed in a country like American. But I do not believe we should be spending money on people who broke laws and entered our country illegally. I think that we should spend money to make sure that every United States citizen is getting the best education possible. The financial and should be going to the Americans who can not afford college because their are many Americans struggling to pay threw college. I think if we are trying to make an effort to stop illegal immigration into America paying for their college would not make sense. But programs should give money so that immigrants that came here legally and need help paying for their school.

  17. I agree with Trevor and John. I do not think that scholarships should be given out to illegal immigrants. There are plenty of U.S. CItizens that need the money this may be given to these illegal immigrants. I feel that it is completely unnecessary to fund these illegal immigrants because they are not citizens of our country. These people broke our country's laws and should be punished for it, not rewarded. The bottom line for me is that American students are missing out on opportunities because the money is going towards people don't deserve it. If illegal immigrants want money for college, than they should become citizens.

  19. I agree with Sam and Nate because these people came to our country illegally, if we give them money to go to school, that will just encourage more and more people to come here illegally. It may be important for people to get an education, but instead of funding illegal immigrants, put the money to people living in poverty and help them get an education. If people come here illegally that we know about the US should punish them not give them rewards. If these people become legal immigrants and then they need help finding an education it would be one thing to help them, but there is no way the United States should give money to illegal immigrants.

  20. I agree with Sam Nat and Mike. I believe that it is not fair for illegal immigrants to get funding and scholarship for being in our country illegally. It is unfair to American citizens who are in our country and are struggling enough trying to put students through school. School now a days is really expensive and to be handing out money to people who aren't even really immigrants is really unnecessary. I do how ever thing that they should be educated but I believe its unfair to give someone who isn't even a citizen of the United States money.

  21. I agree with David, Matt, Kayla and Bobby. I think this new law will be beneficial to California because it will educate the immigrants so they can become a part of society. Many people complain that the immigrants do not try to acclimate to the United States and learn English and try to find stable jobs. So this is the immigrants' chance to become something. The United States advertises itself as a welcoming country, so we need to be welcoming. The new program will be helpful to the newcomers and make the overall economy of California more stable. I can see where other people are coming from about this new act being a waste of money. But I think putting in the money now will help California in the long run.

  22. I agree with Alexis because not only will it help California but since we are free to move about the counrty it will help our other states where these people may move to. Furthermore, it will ,like Alexis said, will help them to assimilate to our nalture not only in culture but, also in economy and community. Also as said before it allows them to make something of themselves and of their family, bringing honor, wealth, and prosperity.
