Current Event by David Pelling

In 2001 and 2003, George W. Bush proposed laws that would lower taxes, but the middle class ended up paying a higher percent of their income in taxes wealthier people. Obama plans to lower the national debt, in part by changing the tax laws. He wants to create a system where people are taxed on there income. For example, people making over $1 million a year will have to pay about 30% of that $1 million in taxes on average. People who make only $50,000-$75,000 will only have to pay 15% of their income in taxes. Although the federal taxes are being reformed, the state taxes are still uneven. The states can tax people whatever they want because of federalism. California are currently taxing people who make $50,000 9.55%, while Arizona only taxes 3.36% on the same amount of money. Some states have one income tax that everyone has to pay, like Colorado and Pennsylvania. These taxes are also controversial because if the state can make any tax rate they want, the government cannot control it.

So, if you were a very wealthy person in this country, would you support Obama's plan and lose more money while being fair, or disagree with the law because you can have more money?
Why?

  1. If i was a rich person and there were people suffering under me and I had more than enough money to provide for myself and my family, I would be all for being taxed more. I think that its not fair that middle class people are being taxed more then the wealthy because the wealthy spend money on stuff that doesn't matter. There are people in the United States who struggle everyday to feed their families. There for I agree completely with Obamas plan.

  2. I agree with Alyssa! If I were a wealthy citizen in the United States I believe that it would be my obligation to pay a higher tax in order to keep equality among the people and help the middle class out. Although I do agree with Alyssa that Obama's plan is a good idea, I have to wonder how many wealthy citizens would agree with Obama's Plan. Sometimes wealthy people are associated with the stereotype of being selfish and not as giving to society as people in the middle or lower class. If Obama's plan goes into affect I have to wonder if the wealthy class would be upset to lose their money or if they would be accepting due to the fact that they are helping out citizens of a working class.

  3. I agree with the two previous comments, but to an extent. I agree with Obama's plz IF the rich people are not already using their money. But if there was someone who donated approximately as much or more of the increased tax rate to charity, then I think they should not have to pay the increased rate. Everyone is talking about forced donating, basically, but some people already are donating huge sums of money and percentages of their income!

  4. I disagree with the previous three comments because if I worked hard to get the money I would have I would not wanted to be taxed more. It isn’t fair for the wealthy class to be taxed more just because they have more money. They have all the same rights and fallow all of the same laws that everyone else does, so why should they have to pay more for being privileged? The majority of the upper class already gives money to charity frequently. People that belong to the upper class started in the middle or lower class, so it doesn’t make since that they would have to pay more for bettering their own life.

  5. I agree with the first three comments, if I were really wealthy and had lots of money, I think it would be fair to pay high taxes.I would have a lot of money that I probably wouldn't spend on anything necessary because I probably have everything I need, so paying less wouldn't be fair to other people that aren't wealthy. The middle class people should not be paying more than the wealthy people, it's just not fair.

  6. I agree with both sides. I think people who are rich should have to atleast give a little higher amount in taxes to help the lower and middle class out. However, I don't think they should be taxed 15% higher. Maybe 5% to 10% would be reasonable. But, going off of what Evan said, I think the rich people earned their money and should not HAVE to give more. Why should they have to pay more just because they have more? Therefore, I think I would agree with Obama's plan as long as the tax rate would not, for the wealthy, exceed paying over 10% than the middle class.

  7. I agree that the wealthier should have a higher tax rate. While they did work hard to make more money, they can also live very good without it. The tax rate should at least be constant, because it doesn't make any sense that people who make the most pay the lowest percent.

  8. I would support Obama's law if I was a rich person. It's not equal, but it's fair. If i had more money, I would want to help everyone who is below me regarding socioeconomic classes. I think it's a smart idea because it's not fair to give the rich people the same tax percentage as people who are making much less than them in their yearly salary. So therefore, I think this makes sense and I support and agree with Obama's plan 100%.

  9. If I were a wealthier person, I would support the new law. I would support it because it would make no sense to me that the rich people in the U.S pay a lower tax than the middle-class people. Yeah I’m losing money but that doesn’t really matter because I have an income that would keep e well off even if I am paying a higher taxes.

  10. If i was a wealthier person i would want all the taxes to be fair for each social class. I feel that if i earned my money,i should pay the same percent as everyone else. That way it evens out an is fair for everyone. Having the certain percent for everyone makes it so everyone pays according to their income. So i disagree with Obama's plan, and i do believe it should be fair

  11. I feel like every one should be taxed the same amount, so if a poor person is being taxed thirty percent of their income a rich person be taxed thirty percent. I feel like the is the fairest way for all the classes (upper, lower, and middle.) I don't think someone should have to pay a higher percent then someone else just because they make more, if I were rich (which I am not) I would want to keep my money because I earned it. It's not my fault there a poorer people and I would help out and donate to charity, but the government isn't charity. It doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, everyone has to pay taxes. I feel like the best way to go about that is to tax everyone the exact same amount.

  12. If i was rich, i would understand why i should have to pay more, but i wouldn't think that it was fair. I spent my whole life earning this money why should i have to give it all to the government. If I had one million dollars, and i had to pay 30% taxes, that would be $300,000. That is a big chunk of my money and i couldn't just give up that much money just for it to 'be fair'. So i agree with John and think everyone should pay the same, but understand why people, like Scott, would think that rich people should pay more.

  13. If I was a wealthy American citizen I would agree with Obama's plan. Most people who this would effect have more money than they need. While other family's who could be paying a higher percentage on taxes may need that money a lot more and are less fortunate. People should be less selfish with their money and help others who may be struggling.
