Assignment Due Monday September 19th

We have spent significant time analyzing six democratic principles that are established in our founding documents and how they are at being applied to a present day issue. To reflect on and use what you have learned, please consider other current issues or challenges that our country is facing and discuss how one of the six democratic principles (limited government, popular sovereignty, checks and balances, separation of powers, equal protection, federalism) is being applied to that issue.

In responding to this post, you must (in paragraph form):

  1. Explain a present day issue in our country.
  2. Reference a specific current event article that you have used to better understand the issue you have chosen (provide a link to your article so others can read it if they want to learn more).
  3. Show how one or more of the democratic principles is demonstrated in the example you have chosen (Please pick a principle that is different than the one you focused on in class).
This blog response will be worth a five point homework grade for history.

In America we have decided in our national documents that we as citizens have the right and the honor to elect representatives to make decisions that we would potentially believe in and would have chosen for ourselves with our best interest in mind.
Every four years we have this privilege to act upon. This year is the year in which we begin to see the likely hood of elected representatives becoming president, and this year it is between our current president, Barak Obama and Mitt Romney. At the moment we can see that Mitt Romney has a 3% lead over Obama, personally I hope Obama wins. 9% would elect others and 8% are undecided. This survey was taken the night of Sept. 12, 2011.
What does all of this mean? Well, I’m glad you asked. It means that the founding fathers idea of popular sovereignty is working even 300 years later. Popular sovereignty (pop. Sov) is basically our right to elect representatives to lead our government. Also through this and things said in the constitution we have the right to vote and to remove elected representatives if we see fit. And in this coming year we will exercise this right in order to create a new era to add to future text books.
